What to do after hail or hurricane damage in Houston

A calm checklist for the first hours and days. Stay safe, document, prevent further damage, then talk to your insurer — and be careful with door-to-door storm crews.

1. Stay safe

Do not climb on a wet or damaged roof. Watch for downed power lines and unstable limbs. If water is entering the house, move valuables and use buckets; a roofer can tarp openings.

2. Document from the ground

Take dated photos and video of the roof slopes you can see, gutters, vents, screens, vehicles, and any interior stains. Note the storm date. NOAA storm reports and local news can help establish that an event occurred in your area.

3. Common damage signs

  • Missing, creased, or lifted shingles
  • Round bruises or granule loss on asphalt shingles
  • Dents in soft metal (gutters, vents, downspouts, AC fins)
  • Granules collecting in gutters or at downspouts
  • Water stains on ceilings or in the attic

4. Insurance basics in Texas

Report damage to your insurer promptly and ask about temporary repairs. Keep receipts for tarping. Policies often have separate wind/hail deductibles stated as a percentage of Coverage A. Texas law generally requires you to pay your deductible; it is illegal for a contractor to waive or rebate it (Business & Commerce Code § 27.02). Roofers also may not act as your public adjuster. See the Texas Department of Insurance guide. We do not give insurance advice.

5. Avoid storm chasers

  • Ask for a local address and a current certificate of insurance
  • Get a written contract before work begins
  • Do not pay the full amount up front
  • Walk away from anyone offering to “cover your deductible”
